GAF vs. CertainTeed Shingles: How to Compare Your Options

Compare GAF Timberline HDZ with CertainTeed Landmark and Landmark PRO. Review shingle construction, colors, coverage, roof accessories and warranty questions.

Compare the shingle line, then compare the roof system

GAF and CertainTeed both offer multiple roofing products. A useful comparison starts with the exact shingle line you are considering, not a blanket claim that one manufacturer is better. For an architectural asphalt roof, GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed Landmark or Landmark PRO are starting points to investigate. They are separate products, not interchangeable specifications or guaranteed price equivalents.

GAF identifies Timberline HDZ as an architectural shingle. CertainTeed describes Landmark as dual-layered and Landmark PRO as multi-layered. That establishes a construction distinction to research, but it does not establish which product is best for your roof. Match the product to the project specification, the desired appearance and the installer’s proposed assembly.

Architectural vs. three-tab shingles

Architectural and three-tab shingles should be treated as different product types. Architectural shingles use a layered construction for a dimensional look. GAF Royal Sovereign is identified as a three-tab line; Timberline HDZ is architectural. Comparing Royal Sovereign directly with Landmark PRO without accounting for construction would answer a different question from comparing architectural shingles.

For a repair, identify the existing shingle’s line, dimensions and profile before choosing a replacement. For a complete replacement, have the installer confirm the covering and roof details for the project. A visual match alone does not confirm that two products can be mixed within an assembly.

Which brand costs less?

A current, project-specific quote is more useful than a general brand price ranking. Compare the exact lines, the same measured roof area and the same accessory scope. A price per bundle can be misleading when package coverage differs. Normalize the field shingles to covered roof area, then compare starters, ridge caps, membranes, flashing, ventilation, fasteners and delivery separately.

Keep material pricing distinct from installation, tear-off, disposal and any deck repairs. Eagle’s catalog does not establish a fixed installed roof price. Product availability, quantities and service coverage need confirmation for your location.

Compare the warranty documents, not just the headline

A warranty’s advertised duration is only part of the comparison. Read the document that applies to the selected product, market and installation. Look for what is covered, coverage periods, exclusions, transfer conditions and any requirements for accessories, installation or registration. Different warranties from the same manufacturer may have different eligibility conditions.

Ask the installer to identify the proposed warranty and the assembly that qualifies for it. Do not assume that combining any shingles, underlayment and ridge cap from one brand automatically qualifies the roof for every warranty that brand offers.

Build two comparable materials lists

  1. Record the exact GAF and CertainTeed product lines and proposed colors.
  2. Use the same measured roof surface area and an installer-selected waste allowance.
  3. Confirm each package’s coverage and round the quantities to whole packages.
  4. Measure eaves, rakes, hips and ridges for starters and caps.
  5. List the underlayment, leak barriers, flashing, ventilation and fasteners specified for each assembly.
  6. Compare documented performance and warranty conditions for those exact products.

This produces a comparison of two proposed roof systems, rather than two brand names. Use our roofing materials checklist to organize the quantities.

Which should you choose?

Start with the project’s required specifications, then narrow by the exact product’s appearance, documented properties, accessory requirements and confirmed availability. If both proposed systems meet the project requirements, use comparable written quotes and installer recommendations to make the decision. There is no defensible universal winner based on the brand alone.

Browse GAF roofing products or browse CertainTeed roofing products, then check the selected product details. Include the project location, quantities and timing when requesting a materials quote.
